Tag/Day 4.3 auf der/on NORWEGIAN JADE in Piräus/Piraeus, Greece

Dieses Mal gab es Rinderbrühe und Wasser zur Begrüßung.

Friendly greetings from Margarita Bazhanova and Christine. But when I walked to the other direction to take pictures of AEGEAN ODYSSEY, LOUIS AURA and THOMSON SPIRIT. This was confusing Christine as we will set sail soon... She should found a self-help group with Yvonne from Holland America Line and the crew from Celebrity...



Freundlich werde ich zunächst durch Margharita Bazhanova und Christine begrüßt. Als ich dann jedoch in die andere Richtung laufe, um in Ruhe die AEGEAN ODYSSEY, LOUIS AURA und THOMSON SPIRIT zu fotografieren, stoße ich bei Christine auf Unverständnis, weil wir ja bald ablegen... Sie sollte gemeinsam mit Yvonne von Holland America Line und den Leuten von Celebrity eine Selbsthilfegruppe gründen...

So verlassen wir Piräus.



So we left Piraeus.

It was so sad as no bells playing "The Children from Piraeus" ("Never on Sunday") to bid farewell. So I had play the song on my iPhone.



Leider läuft das Glockenspiel "Die Kinder aus Piräus" ("Ein Schiff wird kommen") nicht zum Abschied. Schade. So spiele ich selbst das Lied vom iPhone ab.

Im Atrium wird leise musiziert. Echt schöne Hintergrundmusik zum Essen. Leider bleibt es nicht dabei.



In the atrium they had calm music. Very nice background music for dining. But they did not stay with this music.

No more free coffee around the Aloha Bar. My personal opinion: I like the idea. When you pay for coffee and all seats are taken by guests with free coffee it was frustrating.



Der kostenlose Kaffee steht nicht mehr an der Aloha Bar. Muss ich persönlich sagen: finde ich absolut in Ordnung. Ich habe mich schon oft geärgert, dass ich für den Kaffee extra zahle und dann alle Plätze durch die belegt waren, die den kostenlosen Kaffee tranken.

Nun startet der Abend der Probleme. Das kann auf jedem Schiff mit jeder Kreuzfahrtgesellschaft passieren. Wichtig ist jedoch, dass man es an Bord sagt und nicht frustriert von Bord geht und jedem erzählt, wie schlimm es war. Und wichtig ist es auch, dass man es an Bord so damit umgeht, dass man mit einem guten Gefühl von Bord geht. Im Blue Lagoon Café fing es an: Statt der tollen Hühnerbrühe mit dem tollen Ingwergeschmack, bekomme ich die Reste der Rinderbrühe mit einer dicken Schicht Pfeffer auf dem Boden der Tasse. Leider war nicht nur die Suppe unerfreulich beim nachmittäglichen Besuch des Blue Lagoon Cafés. Irgendwie sind alle ein wenig kopflos and sind nur mit sich selbst beschäftigt. Ich vermisse einen Geist hier: "Erst der Gast, dann Internes" - so erst den Gast fragen, was er will bevor ich den Tisch abräume. Aber das ist eigentlich "normal"! Und zwar man merkt einfach, dass derzeit ein neues Schiff eröffnet wird und viele Teams sich erst neu als Team mit Weitblick formen müssen.



Now the night of the problems started. It could happen on any ship with any cruise lines. It is most important that you say it while you are on board and will not return home with a frustratd feeling and tell everyone how bad it was. And it is also important that they can handle it on board that you are leaving the ship with a good feeling. It started in the Blue Lagoon Café: Instead of the great chicken broth with the great ginger flavor you got the beef broth which was left with a shift of pepper on the ground of the cup. Not only the soup was unpleasant when I visited the Blue Lagoon Café. Somehow everyone here were a little headless and extremely busy with themselves. I missed a certain spirit: "First the guest than internal affairs" - so instead of asking the guest what they would like to order they prefered to clear the tables. But that was always "normal"! Anytime they open a new ship you can feel it because many teams still need time to form themselves as teams with farsightedness.

In the evening we went to the Moderno. Just opposite of the Blue Lagoon Café and connected by the open atrium. The former Tex-Mex-Restaurant.



Abends geht es ins Moderno. Genau gegenüber vom Blue Lagoon Café und verbunden durch das offene Atrium. Das ehemalige Tex-Mex-Restaurant oder besser Tapas und Salsa-Restaurant.

Und damals hatte Mahmut immer ein Auge darauf, dass das Team ein tolles Erlebnis bietet.



And then Mahmut had always an eye on that the team offered a great experience.

And it was a true team. That was why loved to eat there in the past: we could concentrate to the great performance at the table: Mahmut and the Paniolo-team. But you need to be fair: They run the Moderno with less crew-members which means more work for each of them and less time for guests.



Und es war ein echtes Team. Daher haben wir in der Vergangenheit dort sehr gerne gegessen: weil wir uns auf eine gute Leistung am Tisch konzentrieren konnten: Mahmut und das Paniolo-Team. Aber man muss fairerweise sagen: Das Moderno wird wohl mit weniger Crew-Mitglieder betrieben und daher mehr Arbeit für jeden einzelnen bedeutet weniger Zeit für jeden Gast.

Um es vorweg zu sagen: eine gute Performance und ein guter Service spiegelt sich auch in den Trinkgeldern wieder: wir zahlen 12,00 USD pro Tag und Person = 240,00 USD für Bruno und mich für die 10 Nächte an Bord. Wir verdoppeln im Grunde genommen dieses Geld für die Crew in dem wir denen bei jeder Mahlzeit etwas zusätzlich etwas in Bar oder auf der Rechnung mitgeben. In Einzelfällen gab es für ein Team auch schon mal 50,00 USD, wenn alles am Abend stimmte und jemand wie Monica extra zwei Stunden früher zum Dienst kam, um unseren Wunsch einen Tisch bei ihr zu bekommen zu erfüllen. Leider gab es für diesen Abend keinen Cent dazu und damit auch keine Bilder von der Crew.



To say it at the beginning: a good performance and a good service will be reflected in the tipping. We pay 12.00 USD per night and person = 240.00 USD for Bruno and me for the 10 nights onboard. We normally double the money for the crew as we add a little with every meal in cash or we add on the bill. There are single occassions we we add 50.00 USD if the evening was perfect and someone like Monica came two hours earlier to her shift to fullfil our request to have a table with her. For that night we did not add one cent and there will be no pictures of the crew.

I do not need caviar, truffes or champagne to be happy. Important is only the way they treat me so I could handle to get dry bread and simply water only. There were only very few who can handle and offer that: like Monica then: She always confirmed the order in a loud way. That was the way to say that you noticed your guest. She always commented the choice: "Very good choice!" - "Excellent selection!". It was her way to offer that you might should change your selection - depending the way how she said it. "I know that you prefer to eat medium-rare but with this cut of the meat you should like it more medium." - "I know that this would not be your taste - therefore I prepared for you already a piece of cheese cake which I personally like much more" - That were the habits I felt very comfortable as guest and Monica did it very well. If you hire her as trainer after her baby vacation: NCL would make a big push forward without spending a lot of money.



Ich brauche kein Kaviar, Trüffel oder Champagner, um glücklich zu sein. Wichtig sind mir die Umgangsformen, so dass ich mit trocken Brot und Wasser klar käme. Da gibt es nur sehr wenige, die das gut beherrschen: z. B. damals Monica: Sie hat immer die Bestellung immer laut bestätigt, dabei geht es darum, dass man signalisiert, dass man den Gast wahrgenommen hat. Sie hat immer mit die Bestellung kommentiert "Very good choice!" - "Excellent selection!". Eigentlich war es ein Signal von ihr, dass man ggfls. nochmals etwas tauschen sollte. Je nach dem, wie sie es gesagt hat. "I know that you prefer to eat medium-rare but with this cut of the meat you should like it more medium." - "I know that this would not be your taste - therefore I prepared for you already a piece of cheese cake which I personally like much more" - Das waren einfach Umgangsformen, bei denen ich mich als Gast wahnsinnig wohlgefühlt habe und Monica konnte das sehr sehr gut. Wenn man sie mal nach ihrer Elternzeit als Trainerin engagiert: NCL würde einen Riesensprung nach vorne machen, ohne dass es viel Geld kostet.

Das Büffet war wie immer sehr gut.



The buffet was as usually good.

I loved the rolls but that time they were more like rubber and did not taste so yummy like the tasted before. In the past they always had to get us some additional.



Ich liebe ja diese Brötchen, aber dieses Mal waren sie doch sehr gummiartig und schmeckten irgendwie nicht so lecker, wie sonst. Sonst mussten sie mir immer welche nachbringen.



I am a true souplover.



Ich bin ja nun ein ziemlicher Suppenfan.

Daher habe ich beide Suppen probiert. Aber irgendwie habe ich sie in besserer Erinnerung. Irgendwie drohte ziemlich Ärger heute Abend... Es war so die Summe von Kleinigkeiten, die mir den Abend verdorben haben... z. B. das eigentlich jeder nur für seinen Tisch zuständig war. Es kam schon immer wieder jemand vorbei, nur der fühlte sich nicht zuständig mal zu gucken, ob etwas auf dem Tisch, was man mitnehmen könnte. Da habe ich auch mal Sachen übereinander gestapelt, was ich normalerweise hasse und nie mache.



So I tried both soups. But I had them in better memories. Looked like a lot of anger for tonight... It was the sum of the small items which ruined the night... like they were only in charge for their own table. Someone came around but did not feel in charge to take something away back to the galley. So I stapled some of the china what I normally hated to do and normally never do it.



oder die Beilagen. So wurde es serviert: die Chimmichuri schwappte schon über. Jedes Mal, wenn man dann die Schale in die Finger nahm, hatte man fettige Finger und kein feuchtes Handtuch, um sich mal die Finger sauber zu wischen.



or the sides. It was service that way that the Chimmichuri spilled over. Everytime you took the bowl you had greasy fingers and you had no wet towel to clean your fingers.

That was the way they served the sauces on NORWEGIAN EPIC.



So wurde es z. B. auf der NORWEGIAN EPIC serviert.

Oder wie hier auf der NORWEGIAN SUN. Da lief nichts über und man hatte keine schmierigen Finger.

Furthermore I felt to be set under pressure: all signs were on red. They put me under pressure by start the preparations for the main part. Sorry but that was making me nervous.



Außerdem fühlte ich mich extrem unter Druck gesetzt: alle Schilder waren auf rot. Und ich werde unter Druck gesetzt, in dem bei allen anderen schon für den Hauptgang hergerichtet. Sorry, aber mich macht so etwas nervös.





Als ich dann nachgefragt habe, ob der Tisch für heute nochmals verkauft wurde, haben sie dann doch mal das Tempo rausgenommen. Nun war alles auf grün und nun konnte es losgehen. Nacheinander kamen die verschiedenen Fleischgänge.



So I asked them if they sold the table for another session the night and then they started to take off the speed. Now every thing was set to green and they could start. One meat course followed the next one.

Before I need to start again a general discussion like on MEIN SCHIFF 2: this is exactly medium-rare for me. Exactly that way I got it already on board. Just perfect!



Bevor ich wieder eine Grundsatzdiskussion wie auf MEIN SCHIFF 2 führen muss: das ist für mich medium-rare. Genauso habe ich es zuvor an Bord bekommen. Perfekt!

Das ist für mich nicht medium-rare.



That was not medium-rare.

That was just partly raw for me. But more the music from the atrium made me nervous. An Extreme-Free-Jazz-Guitar-Player thought there was still a need on January 11 (even the Orthodox Christmas was already over) to play "Jingle Bells" and "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open Fire)". And in an extreme loud way so you cannot have any conversations upstairs anymore and dining was no joy anymore. Maybe it is a very good idea to move Moderno closer to the Cagney's so you have the cooking compentence for meat at one spot.



Das ist für mich z. T. roh. Und noch nerviger war allerdings die Musik aus dem Atrium. Ein Extrem-Free-Jazz-Gitarrist meint am 11. Januar (selbst das orthodoxe Weihnachten ist dann vorbei) unbedingt noch "Jingle Bells" und "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open Fire)" spielen zu müssen. Und das extrem laut, dass ein Gespräch oben nicht mehr möglich war und das Essen auch kein Genuss mehr war. Vielleicht ist auch die Idee gut, das Moderno in die Nähe des Cagney's zu packen, damit eine geballte Fleischkompetenz sich um das Essen kümmert.





Dagegen das Lamm, das sie auch als medium-rare bezeichnet haben.

Very good as usual the grilled pineapple.



Sehr gut wie immer: die gegrillte Ananas.

Weniger gut: die Teller wurden nicht automatisch ausgewechselt. Dafür fehlte der Blick, dass man entweder einen Teller für die Knochen braucht oder eben auch mal schon zwischendurch die Teller austauschen muss. Und nicht groß fragen, sondern einfach tauschen.



Less good: they did not exchange the plates automatically. So they had no view that you need a plate for the bones or you need to exchange the plates between the courses. And do not just ask: just do it!

The party was over... For me it was clear: never again Moderno. It was nice. But doing it everytime was no fun anymore as it become more expensive: from 18.00 USD on NORWEGIAN EPIC to 20.00 USD (2014).



Irgendwann ist auch mal Schluss mit Lustig... Für mich steht fest: nie wieder Moderno. Es ist mal schön, aber auf die Dauer macht es keinen Spaß, zumal es nur teurer geworden ist: von damals 18,00 USD auf der NORWEGIAN EPIC auf 20,00 USD (2014).





Was auch weniger schön war: beim Auftragen fiel ein Würstchen auf den Boden.



Less nice either: when serving the sausages one felt on the floor.

Always with the risk that someone might step on it. With Holland America no restaurant crew or guest should touch any food on the floor. So you got someone from Utility Hotel. We told this three crew members but nothing happened.



Immer mit der Gefahr, dass jemand drauf tritt. Bei Holland America ist es so, dass weder die Restaurant Crew noch die Gäste Essen vom Boden aufheben sollen. Dafür holt man jemand von Utility Hotel. Drei Leuten im Restaurant wurde Bescheid gegeben und nichts passierte.

Hier wäre der richtige Mann gewesen: Housekeeping Manager Orlando Manuel. Ihm HÄTTE ich es erzählen können, aber ich wollte mal sehen, ob die anderen nun an der Situation etwas ändern wollten oder nicht. Aber sie wollten wohl nicht. Orlando hatte ich übrigens aus dem Schlaf gerissen, was mir sehr leid tat. Trotzdem gab es die Baumwollwäsche für mich. Vielen Dank.



He would be right man to tell: Housekeeping Manager Orlando Manuel. I COULD have told him but I really wanted to see if or how the other handle the situation. But obviously they did not want to handle. By the way I woke up Orlando by mistake and I felt very sorry. Even though I got the cotton linen. Thanks so much.

I did not like any of the desserts you could get in Moderno.



Die Desserts aus dem Moderno mochte ich alle nicht.

So habe ich in reiner Verzweiflung mir Kuchen aus dem Blue Lagoon Café bestellt und bekommen.



Because I was so desperated I ordered some cake from the Blue Lagoon Café and got it.



Um 22.00 Uhr trat dann die Band der NORWEGIAN JADE auf und spielten toll im Big Band Stil. Hat mir inhaltlich gut gefallen, bloß wieder oben hier im Moderno viel zu laut. War aber nicht weiter schlimm. Wir waren eh fertig. Wir verschwinden schnell in die Kabinen. Vielleicht ist das auch der Grund, warum ich mich mittlerweile so bei Holland America wohl fühle: ich schätze die Ruhe und das ruhige Leben an Bord. Vielleicht ist das ja mein Alter.



At 22.00 hrs the Band of NORWEGIAN JADE appeared and they played great as Big Band. What they played I liked it very much. But again here at Moderno it was too loud which was not too bad: we were ready anyway. We quickly disappeared into our cabins. Maybe this is one of the reasons why I feel so well with Holland America: I appreciate the silence and the calm life onboard. It's maybe my age.

By coincidence I met someone from the Senior Management and told him of my experience. I received a friendly "Thank you for telling us" and that was all. After that discussion it was clear never again Moderno on NORWEGIAN JADE - so sorry for the 100.00 USD. It could happen that something does not meet the expectations. It just happened on NORWEGIAN SPIRIT (see NORWEGIAN SPIRIT-Blog). It just happened with Dhuri. But he wanted me back again so he arranged that the Chef was waiting at the exit to apology personally. Unfortunately I had to give him to go-by as I wanted to see the show. He wanted to show me the raw meat and asking how I would like it the next time. When we returned to the cabin we found a greeting and some chocolate-covered strawberries. It is exactly the masterful way Dhuri handled the problem which I appreciate. It is exactly the carelessness of the customer care in Miami with the NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY and here the Senior Management onboard which might show me that there is a new era started with NCL and the guest is no more in the center of the attention. I would really appreciate following reaction: "You are still for a couple of days onboard! - I would like to have a look on this issue and discuss this matter with some persons-in-charge in the galley and in the service. And maybe you will allow me to invite you and your family in a couple of days again to this venue and you can tell me if we could adjust something for your satisfaction!". Wishful thinking. My wishful thinking.



Zufällig treffe ich jemand vom Senior Management und trage ihm das vor. Ich bekomme ein freundliches "Danke für das Vortragen" und das war es. Nach dem Gespräch war mir klar: Nie wieder Moderno auf der NORWEGIAN JADE - schade um die 100,00 USD. Es kann ja mal durchaus sein, dass mal etwas die Erwartungen nicht erfüllt. Das ist beispielsweise auf der NORWEGIAN SPIRIT passiert (siehe NORWEGIAN SPIRIT-Blog). Es ist ausgerechnet bei Dhuri passiert. Der wollte aber, dass ich auf jeden Fall wiederkomme und hat so mit dem zuständigen Koch am Ausgang gestanden und sich persönlich entschuldigt. Leider musste ich ihn damals "links liegenlassen", weil wir noch zur Show wollten. Er wollte mir das rohe Fleisch zeigen und mich fragen, wie ich es gerne beim nächsten Mal hätte. Als wir dann abends in der Kabine zurück waren, fanden wir diesen Gruß von ihm mit einigen schokoladenüberzogenen Erdbeeren. Dhuris souveräner Umgang mit Problemen ist genau die Art, die ich sehr schätze. Die Gleichgültigkeit vom Kundendienst in Miami bei der NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY und hier an Bord durch das Senior Management könnte ja auch ein Zeichen für neue Zeiten bei NCL sein und der Gast ist vielleicht nicht mehr im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Ich hätte mich über folgende Reaktion gefreut: "Sie sind ja noch ein paar Tage an Bord! - Ich würde mir das gerne mal ansehen und mit einigen Verantwortlichen aus der Küche und dem Service sprechen und vielleicht darf ich Sie und Ihre Familie in ein paar Tagen nochmals hierher einladen und dann sagen Sie mir, ob wir dann zu Ihrer Zufriendenheit einiges ändern konnte!". Reines Wunschdenken. Meinerseits.
