Volkan wollte uns einen schönen Blick von oben ermöglichen, und ohne dass wir steil nach oben oder Stufen hoch laufen müssen: Asansör... und wer französisch in der Schule hatte, wird es sofort erkennen: Ascenseur - der Fahrstuhl.

Volkan wanted to enable us a nice view from the top - without a need of steep ascents or stairs: Asansör... and who had French lessons in school might know it immediately: Acsenseur - the elevator.

Oh... fällt doch nicht sofort auseinander?

Oh... would it collapse immediately?

We were taken in the Dario-Moreno-Street. It was named after a Turkish-Jewish singer who became famous in the 50s with French and Turkish songs. Furthermore there was statue for the honor of the Algerian-French singer Enrico Macias. Here you had a small museum on the artist and you could see that the Orthodox church was present in Turkey as there were some Christmas decoration on the houses. Volkan used the old black-and-white-pictures to explain how his parents spent their life here in Izmir. So all explainations became a personal character like you would tell something about a friend of the family.

Wir werden in die Dario-Moreno-Straße geführt. Sie wurde nach einem türkisch-jüdischem Sänger benannt, der in den 50er-Jahren Berühmtheit mit französischen bzw. türkischen Schlagern erlangte. Ferner gibt es noch eine Statue zu Ehren des algerisch-französischen Sängers Enrico Macias. Hier gibt es noch ein kleines Museum über die Künstler und anhand der Weihnachtsdekoration konnte man gut sehen, dass auch die orthodoxe Kirche hier in der Türkei präsent war. Volkan nutzt die schönen schwarz-weiß Fotos, um eben zu erklären, wie seine Eltern hier die Zeit verbracht haben und wie es damals in Izmir war. Daher bekamen alle Erläuterungen einen sehr persönlichen Charakter, als ein Freund über seine Familie erzählt.

Nun sind wir am "Fahrstuhl" (Asansör): 1907 erbaut, 58 m hoch, kostenfrei und in sehr gutem Zustand, da staatlich bewacht. In der Fahrstuhlkabine hören wir den Gesang von Dario Moreno. Und ein wunderbarer Ausblick von oben.

No we arrived at the "elevator" (Asansör): Built in 1907, 190 feet, free of charge and in a very good condition as it was guarded by the state. In the elevator cabins you could listen to the music of Dario Moreno. And you had a wonderful view from the top.

Es war eine sehr gute Idee hierher zu kommen. Wir genießen den Ausblick.

It was a very good idea to see this place. We really enjoyed the view.

And who does not like to use the elevator need to walk.

Und wer nicht dem Fahrstuhl fahren will, muss halt laufen.

Irgendwie war es auch mal interessant durch weniger touristische Viertel zu fahren.

Somehow it was interesting to drive through less touristic quarters.

After approx. 45 minutes we reached the place Urla and went for a short walk along the promenade.

Nach ca. 45 Minuten haben wir den Ort Urla erreicht und gehen an der Promenade etwas spazieren.

Aber es war ja auch Mittagszeit... Hmm... Zurück zum Schiff und essen, das wir jeden Tag bekommen oder hier lokal. Wir bitten Volkan um einen Restaurantvorschlag und er schlug das Restaurant Sahil vor. Übrigens Nr. 62 von 2.110 Restaurants (2014) bei Tripadvisor im Großraum Izmir. Es war anfangs recht leer, weil es für Türken noch zu früh zum Essen war. Aber im Laufe der Zeit kamen bis auf eine kleine andere Touristengruppe nur Türken zum Essen.

It was lunch time... Hmm... Should we head back to the ship and eat what we could get every day or locally. We asked Volkan to choose a restaurant and he suggested to see the restaurant Sahil. By the way No. 62 of 2,110 restaurants (2014) in Greater Izmir. When we arrived it was quite empty because it was too early for Turks to have lunch. But by and by they came for lunch with the exeption of another small tourist group.

Man merkte, dass sie frisch waren - richtig frisch...

You could feel that they were fresh - real fresh...

They had no fish sticks or fish fillet Bordeaux style (typical German TV dinner you can easily prepare in your oven)... but who need these when you have access to this wonderful fish counter.

Leider gab es keine Fischstäbchen oder Fischfilet à la Bordellaise... aber wer braucht schon so etwas angesichts dieser tollen Fischtheke.

In the restaurant Volkan took us first to the counter full of starters.

Im Restaurant führt uns Volkan erst mal zur Vorspeisentheke.

Hier suchen wir uns gemeinsam aus, was uns gefällt und worauf wir Lust haben.

Here all of us were picking the food which looked good and we liked to have.

Es gibt Cacik. Wenn man es auspricht, dann klingt es fast nach Tsatsiki... und das ist kein Zufall: es ist die türkische Version.

We had Cacik. If you pronounce it it sounds like the Greek work Tzatziki (Greek yoghurt dish)... and that was no coincidence: it was the Turkish version.

Es muss nicht immer griechischer Bauernsalat sein: hauptsache lecker und frisch.

You must not always have a Greek famer's salad: it need only to be yummy and fresh.

I snoozed a little because the night was too short for me as usual...

Ich döse ein wenig, weil die Nacht wie üblich zu kurz war...

Today I was advertising for Cunard...

I need to admonish my Turkish secretary... Se refused to prepare some Cigar Börek with seafood as they are normally filled with cheese.

Meine türkische Sekretärin muss ich abmahnen... Sie weigert sich Zigarrenbörek mit Meeresfrüchten zu machen.

Mit dem frischen Joghurt: richtig klasse.

On top with the fresh yoghurt: it was really good.

Of course we invited our driver Ahmed to join us for lunch.

Selbstverständlich haben wir unseren Fahrer Ahmed mit dazu eingeladen mit uns zu essen.

Mag ich normalerweise gar nicht, aber so frisch vom Rost schmecken sie toll und nicht nach Gummi.

Normally I do not like them but fresh from the grill they did not taste like rubber.

I should choose the main course and so I took the shrimps and a mid-size fish.

Ich soll den Hauptgang auswählen und so nehme die Shrimps und einen mittelgroßen Fisch.

Und noch dazu zwei Spieße, den wir uns teilen. So haben wir einen schönen Mixed-Grill.

Meeresfrüchte-Köfte... Wieso bekomme ich wieder wie in Alexandria Fisch statt Köfte? Damals 2011 auch schon...

Seafood-Köfte... Why was it same in Alexandria in 2011? Fish instead of Köfte...

They allowed to enter the kitchen and to see how they prepared our food.

Ich darf in die Küche und bei der Zubereitung zugucken.

They were really good.

Die waren richtig gut.

Und für ein Stück gegrillten Schwertfisch und gegrilltes Gemüse.

And a piece of the swordfish and some grilled vegetables.

And finally also a piece of freshly grilled fish.

Und noch ein Stück gegrillten Fisch.

Mit etwas frischem Zitronensaft und Olivenöl: ein echter richtiger Genuss.

With some fresh lemon juice and olive oil: a true real joy.

I did not want any dessert but the restaurant did not allow us to leave without having trying something and so we learned that the Turkish cuisine offers more than Baklavar (typical Turkish pastries - extremely sweet and sticky) as dessert.

Ich wollte eigentlich kein Dessert mehr, aber das Restaurant ließ es nicht nehmen, uns zum Probieren etwas zusammenzustellen und so lernen wir, dass die türkische Küche mehr als nur Baklavar zum Dessert hat.

Und noch schön frisches Obst. Selbst nicht Obstesser wie ich, müssen zugreifen, wenn es so verführerisch serviert wird.
