Tag/Day 0B auf dem Weg/on the way to NORWEGIAN SUN in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil

Zu meinem Erstaunen ist das Frühstück hier in diesem Ibis Hotel ganz gut. Sogar frische Papaya. Auch schmecken die Wassermelonen ganz anders. Und natürlich gibt es Pão de queijo. Und die werden von jemandem geplündert.



I was nicely surprised how good the breakfast was here in this Ibis Hotel. They also had fresh papayas. The watermelons tasted entirely different. And certainly, they offered Pão de queijo. And someone was pillaging them.

The hotel was centrally located. The operation of the keycard in the elevator was annoying: you needed to know in which direction you had to insert them.



Das Hotel ist sehr zentral gelegen. Nervig ist nur die Karte im Fahrstuhl: man muss nur wissen, in welcher Richtung man die Karte einstecken muss.

Es ist Neujahrsmorgen. So ganz langsam erwacht die Stadt.



It was the morning of New Year. Slowly, the city woke up.

And they started to clean the roads.



Und die Straßen werden schon sauber gemacht.

Ich bin für den Ausflug bereit.

Für ein Foto sollen die Zahlen 2019 aufgepustet werden. Ohne Helium (den keiner gerade zufallig dabei hat...) ist es schwierig, wenn man auch will, dass die Zahlen aufrecht stehen.



For a picture the figures 2019 needed to be blown up. Without Helium (and none of us had accidentally some with us...) it was difficult if you want the figures to stay upright.

We waited for Marlene. She came very punctually, even it was New Year, but we need to point out: she was German origin... the Prussian virtues like punctuality were still existing... And that was South America.



Wir warten auf Marlene. Sie kommt sehr pünktlich, trotz Neujahr, aber wir halten mal zu Gute: Sie ist ja deutschstämmig... die preußischen Tugenden wie Pünktlichkeit existieren noch... Auch das ist Südamerika.

Heute geht es auf die argentische Seite des Nationalparks der Wasserfälle von Iguazu. Warum wir ausgerechnet Bargeld brauchten weiß ich immer noch nicht. Den Eintritt kann man auch mit Kreditkarte zahlen. Dann müsste ich mich aber mit anstellen. Im Nationalpark drinnen, kann man alles mit Karte, USD oder Euro bezahlen. Allerdings fällt unterwegs eine Touristenmaut an, die in bar entrichtet werden muss. Der Geldautomat rückt auf jeden Fall nichts heraus. Marlene hat uns erklärt, dass er oft leer ist. Weil eben so große Beträge ausbezahlt werden müssten, müsste man wohl zwei Mal am Tag den Geldautomaten nachfüllen. Aber da er so weit weg ist und auch jetzt der dritte Tag in Folge ein arbeitsfreier Tag ist, gibt es hier nichts mehr.



That day we went to the Argentian side of the National Park of the Iguazu Falls. I had still no idea why we would need cash. You could also pay the admission by credit card. But in this case, you needed to queue up too. Inside the National Park, you could pay for everything by card, in USD or Euro. But on the way, you had to pay a kind of tourist toll, which needed to be paid in cash. The ATM did not release anything. Marlene explained that it was frequently empty. Because they needed to release higher amounts, they would need to refill the ATM twice a day. But as it was so distant and it was the third consecutive workfree day, there was nothing more to release.

One action to make everything eco-friendlier was the construction of the rail line and to ban all motor traffic in the park.



Eine Maßnahme, um alles ökologischer zu machen, war der Bau der Eisenbahn und damit den gesamten Motorverkehr im Park zu verbannen.

Mit der Park-Eisenbahn geht es zunächst bis an das andere Ende. Wir schaffen es gerade noch mit allen mitzukommen.

Everywhere they warned of monkeys and goatis.



Überall wird vor Affen und Goatis gewarnt.

Goatis sind Verwandte des Waschbärens.



Goatis were a relative kind of racoons.

Quite avid and naughty.



Ziemlich gierig und frech.

Und auch nicht scheu. Sie mögen auch Kaffee.



They were not shy. And they liked coffee.

First, we went to the terminal station of the train: Devil's throat. But you need to walk another 20 minutes over a nice catwalk before you reached it.



Zunächst geht es bis zum Endstation des Zuges: Teufelsrachen. Allerdings muss man noch etwas 20 Minuten über einen schönen Steg laufen bevor man ihn erreicht.

Angekommen ist es schon ziemlich wild. Leider überlebt meine Kamera den Besuch nicht: es ist hier zu heiß und zu nass.



It was quite wild when we arrived. Unfortunately, my camera did not survive the visit: here it was too hot and too wet.

After that, we returned to the station Waterfalls, and there we walked first the lower walkway to experience the falls from a middle level.



Danach geht es zunächst zurück bis zur Station Wasserfälle und dort geht es zunächst entlang des unteren Rundwegs, um auf die Fälle von dem mittleren Niveau zu erleben.

Wir gehen am ehemaligen Hotel auf der argentinischen Seite der Wasserfälle vorbei. Hier gibt es auf der ehemaligen Terrasse eine Fotoausstellung.

Here Marlene explained to us: James Bond 007 Moonraker was never filmed here, although many were telling it.



Dabei werden wir von Marlene aufgeklärt: James Bond 007 Mooraker wurde hier nicht gedreht, obwohl es oft behauptet wird.

Ich mag diese Touristenfallen eigentlich nicht: Restaurants mitten in den Attraktionen. Aber sie haben einen großen Vorteil, man kann hier schnell essen und kommt schnell weg und kann schnell weiter machen. Wir essen im Restaurant Fortin. Aber die Auswahl ist ganz gut.



Honestly, I did not like those tourist traps: restaurants in the center of attractions. But they offered the advantage that you could quickly have a meal and head on with your tour right after. We had our lunch in the Fortin Restaurant. The selection was quite good.

The next round we started to walk was the upper walkway alongside the falls. In total, we were walking about 6 miles. My feet hurt but it was worth!



Dann geht es eine Runde auf dem oberen Rundwanderweg entlang der Fälle. Insgesamt sind wir an diesem Tag ca. 10 km zu Fuß unterwegs. Meine Füße tun mir weh, aber es lohnt sich!

Es ist Neujahrstag und wir versuchen eine Kamera für mich zu kaufen. Zunächst versuchen wir es bei Artesanato e Chocolate Caseiro Três Fronteiras auf der brasilianischen Seite: dort gibt es aber nur Geschenke, Souvenirs und Schmuck. Aber sie haben ein gutes WLAN und eine gute Klimaanlage. Es gibt Melitta-Kaffee aus Deutschland in Brasilien. Das erinnert mich an den Film "Das Millionending" mit Pester Ustinov, Karl Malden und Maggie Smith... in dem Film versucht auch jemand löslichen Kaffee nach Brasilien reinzuschmuggeln... Später lese ich nach, dass Melitta sogar mehrere Kaffeeröstereien in Brasilien hat und den lokalen Markt bedient. Weiter geht es wieder an die Grenze in den Duty-Free Shop in Puerto Iguazu, der zur argenitischen Seite zählt. Hier ist alles wie in einem Hochsicherheitstrakt gesichert. Aber ich bekomme zumindest eine Kamera und kann zumindest mehr schlecht als recht Bilder machen. Für 200 USD kann ich damit auch nichts verkehrt machen, außer dass ich für etwa 50 USD auch Batterien für den Rest der Reise gekauft habe. Diejenigen, die nicht mit shoppen waren, haben auf dem Parkplatz ihren Spaß: Samba.



It was New Year's Day and we tried to buy a new camera for me. First, we tried at the store Artesanato e Chocolate Caseiro Três Fronteiras on the Brazilian side: but they only sold gifts, souvenirs, and jewelry. They had good WiFi and good air-conditioning. They offered Melitta-Coffee from Germany in Brazil. It reminded me of the movie "Hot Millions" with Peter Ustinov, Karl Malden, and Maggie Smith... In this movie, someone tried to smuggle instant coffee into Brazil... Later I read that Melitta also operated some coffee roasting plants to serve the local market. We headed back to the frontier into the Duty-Free Shop in Puerto Iguazu, which was part of the Argentinian side. Here everything was secured like in a high-security tract. But at least I could buy a camera, and I could make more or less some pictures. For 200 USD there was not so much I could make wrong but to spend another 50 USD for batteries for the remainder of the voyage. And those who did not go for shopping had their fun on the parking lot: Samba.

We killed correctly the time to get right on time to the airport to collect the bags of Frances and Eddie from Mexico-City. LATAM offered to deliver the bags the same night to the hotel. But each of us was feeling better to collect it all personally and to return it to the hotel.



Wir füllen so perfekt die Zeit auf, damit wir dann auch noch pünktlich zum Flughafen können, um das Gepäck von Frances und Eddie aus Mexico-Stadt abzuholen. LATAM bietet, dass sie es am gleichen Abend zum Hotel liefern würden. Aber alle fühlen sich besser, als sie das Gepäck doch persönlich entgegen nehmen und zum Hotel fahren können.

Für heute Abend hatte das Tourunternehmen Loumar Turismo einen Besuch bei einem Büffet beim Italiener vorgeschlagen. Italiener in Brasilien: muss nicht sein. Stattdessen Japaner in Brasilien. Der Tipp kam von Christoph. Eigentlich eine gute Idee: kleine Portionen, wenig Fleisch, gesund. Genau das richtige nach unserer bisherigen Fleischdiät in zwei Tagen mit drei üppigen Büffets. Direkt gegenüber ist der der ClubMaki, der mit günstigen Preisen wirbt. Nur haben mich die Preise in Basel so verdorben: ich bestelle etwas mehr, damit ich satt werde... aber hier gibt es für wenig Geld riesige Portionen... es schmeckt etwas mehr brasilianisch statt japanisch, aber für den Preis ist es in Ordnung. Zum Glück müssen wir nur über die Straße, denn als wir wieder zum Hotel gehen, fängt es genau an zu regnen.



For that night, our tour operator Loumar Turismo suggested to see an Italian buffet restaurant. Italian in Brazil: something I had no need for. Instead Japanese in Brazil. A suggestion Christoph made. Actually, it was a good idea: small portions, less meat, healthy. Exactly the right food after two days of meat-diet in three rich buffet restaurants. Just opposite, there was ClubMaki, who advertised with low prices. But Basle, Switzerland ruined my feeling for prices: I ordered some more, to become full... but here you, you get for little money large portions... it tasted more Brazilian but Japanese, but for this price level it was ok. Luckily, we only needed to cross the street to get back to our hotel as it started to rain now.
