Tag/Day 0: auf dem Weg zur/on the way to the REUNION-SHIPSPOTTING-"PARTY" NORWEGIAN SKY 2015/NORWEGIAN JADE 2017 in Hamburg, Germany

Es beginnt alles im ICE 774 auf dem Weg nach Hamburg. Durch meine Wochenendfahrerei mit der Deutschen Bahn habe ich soviele bahn.bonus Punkte, dass ich ein kostenloses Ticket nach Kopenhagen und zurück bekomme und dank geschickter Zugwahl kann ich sogar auf dem Hin- und Rückweg in Hamburg übernachten.



It all started on ICE High-Speed-Train 774 towards Hamburg, Germany. Due to my weekend-commuting with German Railways Deutsche Bahn, I had so many bahn.bonus loyalty points, that I could get a free return ticket to Copenhagen, Denmark. Due to the smart selection of trains, I was able to stay overnight in Hamburg on the outward and return journey.

When I arrived at Hamburg Central Station, I could see at the Kirchenallee exit, how they were taken care of the passengers of the MSC ORCHESTRA and their baggage.



Angekommen am Hamburger Hauptbahnhof sehe ich am Ausgang Kirchenallee, wie die Gäste der MSC ORCHESTRA und deren Gepäck in Empfang genommen werden.

Ich muss zur U-Bahn U4. Der Weg dahin ist derzeit (2019) etwas beschwerlich, weil der direkte Zugang zum Hauptbahnhof wegen Bauarbeiten geschlossen ist. Ich hole mir eine Tageskarte. Neu fährt sie bis zu den Elbbrücken. Sobald auch die S-Bahn dort hält, kann man dann hier umsteigen. Den 10-Minuten-Takt unter der Woche empfinde ich als "nervig": zu sehr habe ich mich an den 7 1/2-Minuten-Takt der Straßenbahnen in Basel gewöhnt. Schön sind die USB-Lademöglichkeiten in den U-Bahn-Zügen.



I need to see the subway U4. The way there was currently (2019) quite strenuous since the direct access to the terminal building was closed due to construction works. I bought a day pass. It was new that she was terminating now at Elbbrücken. Once the commuter train would also stop here, you could easily transfer. The 10-minutes-frequency during the weekdays, I felt somehow "annoying": It was too comfortable to have a 7-1/2-minutes-frequency with the trams in Basle, Switzerland. It was very nice to have the opportunity to recharge by USB on the trains.

Usually, I am always leaving at Überseequartier because you could find here the HafenCity Cruise Terminal. Last time, the voyage on ARTANIA 2014. But today, I had to go to HafenCity Universität. Some light therapy. Unfortunately, the suitable light- and sound-spectacle was only available during the weekend.



Normalerweise steige ich ja immer Überseequartier aus, weil hier das Kreuzfahrtterminal HafenCity ist. Zuletzt bei der Reise mit der ARTANIA 2014. Aber heute geht es bis HafenCity Universität. Ein wenig Lichttherapie. Leider gibt es das passende Licht- und Klangspektakel nur am Wochenende.

Ich wohne dieses Mal mit meinen Punkten aus dem IHG Rewards Club im neuen Holiday Inn in der HafenCity. Liegt sehr gut zur U-Bahn U4 und zum Bus 111. Gefällt mir ausgesprochen gut.



I was staying this time in the new Holiday Inn in HafenCity District by redeeming my points of the IHG Rewards Club. It was very significant located for easy accessing subway U4 and bus 111.

Although I arrived very early: they offered me a room if I could live with the circumstances not staying on a floor, which was preferred to allocate IHG Rewards Club members. So there was a safe missing (yet) in the room.



Obwohl ich sehr früh dran bin: mir wird schon ein Zimmer angeboten, wenn ich damit leben kann, dass ich nicht in der Etage untergebracht werde, in dem bevorzugt die IHG Rewards Club-Mitglieder untergebracht werden. Deswegen fehlt (noch) ein Tresor im Zimmer.

Auch ein schönes Badezimmer erwartet mich.

Mit Bus 111 will in Richtung Landungsbrücken. Das dauert ewig: 1. der Bus fährt hier unter der Woche nur alle 20 Minuten und 2. sie fährt komplett durch die HafenCity in Schleifen und nicht den direkten Weg.



By bus 111 I wanted to get to Landungsbrücken (Landing Stages). It took an eternity: 1. the bus only operated during the weekdays every 20 minutes, and 2. the route took you in loops through the entire HafenCity district and not the direct way.

But it departed more or less in front of the hotel. Alternatively, I could pick a bike rental Stadtrad. But I bought already a day pass by Hamburg Transit Association HVV.



Aber sie fährt eben fast vor dem Hotel ab. Alternativ hätte ich mir ja auch ein Stadtrad nehmen können. Ich hatte mir aber schon eine HVV-Tageskarte gelöst.

Ich fahre zunächst nach St. Pauli. Zur Großen Freiheit rund um den Beatles-Platz an der Reeperbahn. Es ist schönes Wetter, das ich eben nutze um mit einer der HADAG-Hafenfähren (Linie 61 zum Neuhof - aber sie ist genauso voll mit Touristen wie die Linie 62 nach Finkenwerder) eine Runde im Hafen zu drehen und mich von der Köhlbrandbrücke zu verabschieden. Es steht zwar noch nicht fest, wann sie abgerissen wird, aber leider muss sie irgendwann einer neuen Brücke oder einem neuen Tunnel weichen. Bei der HADAG hat man sich schon auf den Christopher Street Day in Hamburg entsprechend vorbereitet. Ich komme zur Hochsaison der Kirschen aus dem Alten Land. In diesem Moment denke ich an Volker Lechtenbrink und sein Lied "Ich mag". Meine liebste Zeile: "Hamburg, meine Stadt". Ich verstehe sehr gut, warum diese Zeile in dem Liedtext ist.



I went first to the amusement district St. Pauli. To Große Freiheit (famous historic street within the district with many "clubs" etc.) around Beatles-Square (they started their career here around!) on Reeperbahn (most iconic street within the district). It was nice weather. So I went one round on a HADAG-port ferry (Route 61 towards Neuhof - no touristic destination just piers - but it was also full of tourists like route 62 towards Finkenwerder). It was a chance for me to bid farewell to the Köhlbrand-Bridge. It should be clear that it would be torn down to be replaced by a new bridge or by a tunnel. HADAG was already well prepared for the Christoper Street Day in Hamburg. I just came right for the harvest of the cherries in the Altes Land area. I remembered a German song by Volker Lechtenbrink: "Ich mag" (I like). I could understand the reasons, why Hamburg became part of his likes and mentioned in his song.

I had barely any chances in Switzerland to have good Chinese food and above all Dim Sum and at affordable prices. When staying in cities like Hamburg, I used to find a location to eat Dim Sum. So far, I always enjoyed eating at Dim Sum House Restaurant China, next to Central Station. We went here before our sailing on HAMBURG 2014, and when I was in between in Hamburg. But somehow I wanted to try something new. I went to Jumbo in the neighborhood of Wandsbek. Before I started, I called there to ask if they would serve Dim Sum in the evening. Usually, it was only served during the day. But nobody answered the phone, so I concluded that they probably were busy. Also, on their homepage and Tripadvisor, it said that they would be open until 15:30. Unfortunately, they now had Tuesday off. Unfortunately, they did not update their homepage. Too bad.



Nach dem ich in der Schweiz kaum Chancen hatte, gut chinesisch und vor allem Dim Sum zu essen und vor allem zu bezahlbaren Preisen, muss ich Aufenthalte in Städten wie Hamburg dazu nutzen, um Dim Sum zu essen. Bisher habe ich immer sehr gerne im Dim Sum Haus Restaurant China am Hauptbahnhof gegessen. Wir waren hier vor unserer Reise auf der HAMBURG 2014 hier essen, und wenn ich zwischendurch in Hamburg war. Aber irgendwie wollte ich etwas neues ausprobieren. Ich fahre zu Jumbo nach Wandsbek. Zuvor rufe ich dort an, um nachzufragen, ob sie auch abends Dim Sum servieren. Normalerweise wird es nur tagsüber serviert. Aber niemand geht ans Telefon, also schließe ich daraus, dass sie wohl viel zu tun haben. Auch auf der Homepage und bei Tripadvisor heißt es, dass sie bis 15:30 Uhr geöffnet haben. Leider haben sie neu Dienstag Ruhetag. Leider haben sie ihre Homepage nicht aktualisiert. Schade.

Vor dreißig Jahren gab es in der Bremer Reihe gegenüber vom Hauptbahnhof ein China-Restaurant, das auch Dim Sum angeboten hat. Aber das fand ich damals nicht so lecker und es hatte irgendwann dort den Besitzer gewechselt. Obwohl ich schon auf dem Weg wieder zum Dim Sum Haus Restaurant China bin, bemerke ich in der Seitenstraße der Kirchenallee vor dem Hauptbahnhof die Werbung und sehe hier auch Bilder von Dim Sum im China-Restaurant Mei Moon. Aber wie immer gilt: manchmal muss man woanders gegessen haben, damit man noch feststellt: die anderen sind immer noch besser, obwohl sie schlechter geworden sind. Ist ja bei den Kreuzfahrtgesellschaft nicht anders.



Thirty years ago, there was a Chinese restaurant in the street Bremer Reihe opposite Central Station, which also offered some Dim Sum. But I did not think it was that delicious at the time, and the owners changed sometime there. Although I was on my way back to the Dim Sum House Restaurant China, I noticed the advertising on the side street of Kirchenallee (road in front of Central Station). I saw pictures of Dim Sum in the Chinese restaurant Mei Moon. But as always: sometimes you had to eat somewhere else, so you still realized: the others were still better, even though they got worse. It is not different from cruise companies.

I went back to the hotel. Just next to the hotel there was a little park.



Ich fahre wieder zurück ins Hotel. Direkt neben dem Hotel liegt ein kleiner Park.

Here was before the former train station "Hannoverscher Bahnhof". Before Central Station was built, all Southbound trains departed from here. And unfortunately, it was also part of the sorrowful history of the deportation of Jews in Hamburg during the Third Reich.



Hier war mal der Hannoversche Bahnhof. Bevor es den Hauptbahnhof gab, fuhren hier die Züge in Richtung Süden ab. Und leider auch Teil der leidvollen Geschichte der Judendeportation in Hamburg während des Dritten Reiches.

Ich habe keine Lust zum Abendessen nochmals rauszulaufen. Obwohl es in der HafenCity viele Restaurants gibt. Irgendwie genieße ich die Klimaanlage im Zimmer und möchte meine Bilder bearbeiten. So bestelle ich mir Labskaus in mein Zimmer. Der Rolltisch ist klasse. Schade, dass ich nicht mit dem Auto hier bin: den hätte ich glatt mit nach Hause genommen.



I did not like to leave the hotel again for dinner. Although there were many restaurants in the HafenCity district. Somehow, I enjoyed the air-conditioning in my room and wanted to edit pictures. So I ordered some Labskaus (mashed potatoes with corned beef, onions, bacon - beetroot, pickled cucumber, and a marinated haring aside). It was a traditional Hamburg seamen-dish when they had no refrigerators on the ships! The rolling table was fantastic. It was so sad that I did not come by car: otherwise, I would take it home.

When I was first-time a trainee with a shipbroker in 1986 in Hamburg, I had my very first Labskaus. I still liked it. Although it looked like "recycled" food. But from time to time, you must have it. Indeed, you could dine out in Hamburg, better and more exotic. But it is always lovely to enjoy a local specialty, which you could not get somewhere else, like at home in the Odenwald Highlands. Here, it tasted better, better than at home, and better than with a famous fish-restaurant in Hamburg Daniel Wischer. We went there after our voyage on QUEEN MARY 2 2015.



1986 gab es meinen ersten Labskaus, als ich damals als Praktikant erstmalig in Hamburg gearbeitet habe. Ich mag ihn immer noch. Obwohl er immer noch so aussieht, als ob er vorverdaut wurde. Ab und zu muss es einfach sein. Natürlich kann man in Hamburg besser und exotischer essen, aber es ist auch mal wieder schön, eine regionale Spezialität zu essen. Der schmeckt hier nun mal besser als im Odenwald. Und hier schmeckt er besser als damals nach der QUEEN MARY 2 2015 bei Daniel Wischer - einem traditionellen Fischrestaurant in Hamburg.

Nur der Hering ist leider zu sauer. Aber sauer macht ja bekanntlich lustig.



Only the haring was too sour. But you said in Germany: Sour would make you become funny.

The side salad was delicious. I liked the tiny Nano-Micro-Mini-Tomatoes very much. In case those were tomatoes.



Der Beilagensalat ist klasse. Diese Nano-Mikro-Mini-Tomaten finde ich sehr lecker, falls es überhaupt Tomaten sind.

Aber zum Glück habe ich ja auch meine Kirschen als Nachtisch. Ein perfekter Abschluss für einen perfekten Tag. Morgen früh geht es sehr früh raus. Gute Nacht.
