Tag/Day 0B/C/D vor der/before NORWEGIAN GETAWAY in Eisenach - Berlin, Germany

Letzter Arbeitstag vor dem Urlaub. Beim Einschließen des Gepäcks sehe ich, dass ausgerechnet die Strecke nach Mannheim gestört ist. Wenn ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt gewusst hätte, dass ich noch gerade rechtzeitig weggekommen bin...



Last working day before vacation. When I was locking in my baggage at the train station I could see that there was just a disruption alert on my line towards Mannheim. If I would knew at that time that I just made it right on time...

Outside it was raining. The right moment to have something to enter the vacation mode and to leave Basle, Switzerland.



Draußen regnet es. Der richtige Moment sich noch etwas zur Einstimmung in den Urlaub zu gönnen und Basel den Rücken zu kehren.

Bei Läderach kaufe ich noch die letzten Süßigkeiten für die Reise zum Verschenken.



With Läderach I was buying the last sweets we need as gifts for our voyage.

The weather for our voyage looked so far quite well. I the trunk we had actually only our handbags, fridge box to keep the chocolate cool and our new basket which we got due to the incidents on COSTA FAVOLOSA 2017 and could be used in different functions: like laundry on the way to the ship and later back off the ship. We went first to Mannheim, Germany for the Central Station. Here we waited for Bruno's parents who will join us to the coast of the Baltic Sea. The first break was set at Coffee Fellows before we started. So we had no chance to get to Warnemünde.



Das Wetter für unsere Reise sieht schon mal gut aus. Im Kofferraum ist nur aktuell nur unser Handgepäck. Kühlbox, um die Schokolade zu kühl transportieren und unser neuer Korb, den wir von Costa wegen der Ereignisse auf der COSTA FAVOLOSA 2017 bekommen haben, erfüllt auch tolle andere Funktionen: z. B. für die Dreckwäsche auf dem Weg zum Schiff und später wieder zurück vom Schiff. Es geht zunächst nach Mannheim Hbf. Hier warten wir auf Brunos Eltern, die uns bis zur Ostseeküste begleiten. Die erste Pause findet bei Coffee Fellows statt, bevor wir überhaupt losfahren. So kommen wir nie nach Warnemünde.

Der ersten geplante Stop ist Eisenach in Thüringen. Einen Parkplatz finde ich an der ehemaligen Brauerei.



The first scheduled stop was Eisenach in Thuringia, Germany. I found a parking lot at the former brewery.

In German to study Business Management means BWL. Officially it stands for Betriebswirtschaftlehre. But here in Eisenach it stands for Bach, Wartburg Castle and Luther. I was so happy that I found a parking in the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Street.



Eisenach bedeutet BWL-Studium. Bach, Wartburg, Luther. Ich freue mich, dass ich ausgerechnet an der Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße mein Auto geparkt habe.

Well... obviously I was in the Wild East... The signs did not appear very promising. Was hard to me to understand who was attacking whom.



Aha... ich bin im wilden Osten...

Aber ich verstehe nicht so ganz, mit wem ich hier es zu tun habe.



Furthermore I did not understand properly who was releasing such information.

First stop: Café Brüheim. Film set of a German TV-Familyshow Familie Dr. Kleist from Eisenach which shows the happy side of East Germany. The Liver Paté open face sandwich was yummy. Thuringia is most famous for such meatspreads. The flavour of the chicken soup was familiar to me. Was lake from a concentrate by Struik. Tasted like with me when I was sick and urgently need a chicken soup. The little piece of puff pastry was homemade. The cake was very nice. Here we met our tour guide for our city walking tour which we booked through the Tourist-Info.



Erste Station: Café Brüheim. Drehort von Familie Dr. Kleist. Das Leberwurst-Brot ist lecker. Der Geschmack der Hühnersuppe kommt mir bekannt vor. Sie scheint aus Konzentrat von Struik zu sein. Schmeckt bei mir genauso, wenn ich krank bin und dringendst eine Hühnersuppe brauche. Dieses Stück Blätterteig scheint selbstgemacht zu sein. Der Kuchen ist echt gut. Hier treffen wir uns mit unserer Fremdenführerin zu unserem Stadtrundgang, die wir über die Tourist-Info gebucht haben.

Wir beginnen mit Johann Sebastian Bach. Er steht direkt vor dem Bachhaus. Wobei wir durch unsere Fremdenführerin Sandra aufgeklärt werden, dass das eigentlich gar nicht das Bachhaus ist. Man wollte später einfach die Tafel nicht mehr entfernen, weil auch das eigentliche Bachhaus nicht mehr steht. Ich feiere bei "Jesu bleibet meine Freude" meinen Aufenthalt in Eisenach. Jahrelang war es mein Klingelton auf dem Mobiltelefon. Und zum Bachjahr 2000 klingelte mein Telefon im richtigen Moment: auf einer Massagebank: Ich wurde von der Masseurin gefragt, ob ich Bach mag und Chorerfahrungen hätte. Ich konnte dann "Jesu bleibet meine Freude" aus "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" (BWV 147) dann live in der Evangelischen Stadtkirche in Walldorf (Baden) mitsingen und nicht nur hören. Ab Dezember 2017 fährt ja der ICE öfters nach Eisenach und so können wir bestimmt wieder kommen, um noch mehr im Bachhaus zu entdecken. Ich muss kurz ins Bachhaus und ein paar Souvenirs kaufen.



We started with Johann Sebastian Bach. He was just in front of the Bachhaus (House of Bach). But our tour guide Sandra explained that that was not the House of Bach. They did not want to remove the board because the real House of Bach was not existing anymore. I celebrated with "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" my visit in Eisenach. Many years it was my ringtone on my mobile phone. And in the Year of Bach 2000 my phone rang the right moment: on a massage bank: I was asked by the massage therapist if I liked Bach and had experience in singing in a choir. I could sing live "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" of "Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life" (BMV 147) in the Protestant City Church in Walldorf (Badenia), Germany (near Heidelberg) and not just listen. From December 2017 the German High Speed Train ICE would run more frequently to Eisenach and so we could return easier to discover more of the Bachhaus. I need to see the Bachhaus and to buy few souvenirs.

With Sandra we walked through the city center. The single time on the complete voyage we need the umbrella which we I bought in the Bachhaus. Only for to watch - not for use. We learned many faces of Eisenach but one we did not: Thuringian Rosted Bratwurst Sausages. Everything else Sandra could explain during a tour through Eisenach. In case someone asks for the shoes: The 117th annual German Hiking Day was hold due to the Luther Year / 500th Reformation Anniversary in Eisenach. On our ways we quickly sas the Wartburg Castle. But we need to safe the visit for the next time.



Mit Sandra laufen wir durch die Innenstadt. Das einzige Mal auf der gesamten Reise, dass wir den Regenschirm brauchten, den ich gerade im Bachhaus gekauft habe. Er ist eigentlich nur zum Angucken - nicht zum benutzen. Wir lernen viele Facetten von Eisenach kennen: nur leider eine nicht: Thüringer Rostbratwurst in Thüringen. Alles andere kann euch Sandra selbst in einer Führung durch Eisenach erläutern. Falls die Frage nach den Schuhen kommt: Der 117. Deutsche Wandertag fand anlässlich des Lutherjahrs in Eisenach statt. Unterwegs sehen wir einmal kurz die Wartburg. Aber den Besuch müssen wir auch für das nächste Mal aufschieben.

Mir gefallen die vielen Luthersprüche, die in der ganzen Stadt verteilt aufgehangen wurden. Ich fühle mich doch den Feierlichkeiten anlässlich des 500. Jahrestag zur Reformation nahe.



I liked the many phrases of Luther which were spreaded all over the town. I felt much closer to be a part of the events due to the 500th Reformation Anniversary.

Sandra terminated our tour in the Georgenkirche (Georges Church). Work location of Bach and Luther. Here Sandra explained the Rose of Luther to us and said good-bye. Anyhow all of us were nicely surprised on the great impressions we could win in Eisenach. It would be worth to return.

Auf jeden Fall sind alle positiv überrascht über die tollen Eindrücke, die wir in Eisenach gewinnen konnten. Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall wieder zu kommen.

Da es anfängt zu regnen gehen wir schnell ins Café Toccata.

We headed towards to Berlin: Michendorf South: last Intershop before reaching the border at Dreilinden (Checkpoint Bravo - Enterin West-Berlin).
Here we often buy few small items against Western Currency (Deutsche Mark) before we reentered West-Berlin. Was long time ago. The new service stop was not so interesting to me.



Weiter geht es Richtung Berlin: Michendorf Süd: letzter Intershop vor Dreilinden (Checkpoint Bravo - Einreise nach West-Berlin). Hier haben wir gegen Devisen noch ein paar Kleinigkeiten gekauft, bevor wir wieder in West-Berlin waren. Ist das lange her. Die neue Autobahnraststätte interessiert mich nicht.

Da ich Ambassador-Mitglied bei Intercontinental bin, liegt es nahe, dass ich hier im Intercontinental Berlin übernachte. So kann ich meinen Gutschein für eine Nacht am Wochenende hier sehr gut einsetzen. Wie immer fühle ich mich "zu Hause". Seit dem ich zum ersten Mal als Student hier übernachtet habe, bin ich Ambassador geworden und habe ich es irgendwie immer geschafft, meine Mitgliedsbeiträge zu bezahlen. Wir sind auf der Club-Etage untergebracht und dürfen den Club nutzen. Auch für Brunos Eltern zahlen wir eine Kleinigkeit mehr und sie dürfen den Club Intercontinental auch nutzen.



As I was Ambassador-Member with Intercontinental it was logic that I would stay overnight at Intercontinental Berlin. So I could redeem my voucher for a weekend night very well. As usual I felt "home". When I stayed here as student the first time I became Ambassador and somehow I made it every year to pay the membership fee. We were allocated to the Club Floor and could use the Club. So we paid a little more that Bruno's parents could use the Club Intercontinental as well.

In Berlin we started to tune ourselves for our stay in St. Petersburg, Russia. Here in the Russian Restaurant Samowar (Russian Tea Machine) we got some problems: too large variation and too large portions. Bruno's parents shared a starter plate which was originally for one person. I was full after my Soljanka soup (Ukrainian cabbage soup). The Piroggi (Russian dumpling) which was served as side was much larger. The housemade bread was really yummy. I had not more space for my Shashlik (Meat skewer) even it was really yummy. Thereafter we went back to the hotel.



In Berlin stimmen wir uns auf unseren Halt in St. Petersburg ein. Hier im russischen Restaurant Samowar bekommen wir einige Probleme: viel zu große Auswahl und viel zu große Portionen. Brunos Eltern teilen sich eine Vorspeisenplatte, die für eine Person vorgesehen ist. Ich bin schon nach meiner Soljanka satt. Die Pirogge, die dazu serviert wird, ist sehr viel größer. Das selbstgebackene Brot ist richtig lecker. Platz für mein Schaschlik habe ich kaum noch, auch wenn es sehr lecker ist. Danach geht es direkt ins Hotel zurück.

Am nächsten Morgen schaffe ich erst mir das Geschenk des Hotels anzusehen. Handgemachte Pralinen von Drei Meister.

Wir frühstücken im Club. So richtig glücklich, wie im InterContinental Singapur während der Anreise zur ZAANDAM 2012 und DIAMOND PRINCESS 2016, sind wir allerdings nicht. Irgendwie wirkt der Club unterbesetzt. Daher fühle ich mich nicht so wohl, wie im Club Intercontinental in Singapur. Auch ist die Auswahl und der Serviceablauf etwas enttäuschend. Beispiel: wenn drei bereits ihre warmen Eierspeisen am Tisch haben, sollte man zusehen, dass der 4. möglichst schnell noch seine Eierspeise bekommt, bevor es bei drei Leuten kalt wird. Sollte man daher mit Priorität Tische abräumen und neu eindecken oder lieber in der Küche nachschauen, ob nicht die 4. Eierspeise auch fertig zum Servieren ist.



We had breakfast in the Club. We were not as happy as we were in InterContinental Singapore on our voyage to ZAANDAM 2012 and DIAMOND PRINCESS 2016. Somehow it appeared to me that the Club was undermanned. Therefore I did not feel there as comfortable as I did in the Intercontinental Singapore. The variation and the service were somehome disappointing. Specimen: when three of us had already their hot egg dish on the table. you should see that the 4th egg dish comes as fast as possible, before the egg dishes of the others became cold. So you need to check what has a higher priority: clearing and set new tables or checking with the galley if the 4th dish was not ready to serve.

Tea-Time - Substitute for lunch: Berliner - Berlin Doughnut? "Ich bin ein Berliner..." (quote John F. Kennedy) - "I am a Berlin Doughnut..."... Here again: immediately all sandwiches were gone and I asked for... paperwork was more important than checking in the kitchen... They let me wait. Bruno and his parents went this morning to Reichstag. I did not go because I was just there three days before. So it was a calm morning for me.



Tea-Time - Ersatz für das Mittagessen: Berliner = Berlin Doughnut? "Ich bin ein Berliner..." - "I am a Berlin Doughnut..."... Auch hier wieder: sofort sind alle Sandwiches weg und ich frage nach... Papierkram ist wichtiger, als sofort in die Küche zu laufen... Man lässt mich warten. Bruno und seine Eltern waren vormittags im Reichstag. Ich hatte auf den Besuch verzichtet, weil ich ja erst drei Tage vorher da war. So war es ein ruhiger Vormittag für mich.

Um 16.00 Uhr gehen wir bereits zum Abendessen: Good Friends. Kenne ich bereits seit den 90-er Jahren. Immer wieder gut.

Hier treffe ich mich mit sehr guten Freunden, die ich aus meiner Studienzeit kenne und die ich später noch vorstelle.

Das Essen ist so lecker. Und ich unterhalte mich so gut. Ich habe prompt vergessen, Bilder zu machen. Erst als fast alles aufgegessen ist, merke ich das. Leider habe ich daher auch kein Bild von uns gemacht. So leider auch kein Bild von meinem Quasi-Patenkind Linus.



The food was so yummy. And I really had a good conversation. I really forgot to take pictures. Just before eating all up I noticed it. So I had no picture of us. So I had also no picture of my so-to-say godchild Linus.

We headed to the Waldbühne (Stage in the woods) - my "living room" in Berlin then in the end of the 80s or early 90s with Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Phil Collins, Elton John, Billy Joel, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra etc. etc. I could save the money for the public transport. The ride was included in the ticket price. For me new: no bag larger than a Letter size. So unfornately no more picknick baskets. I was here with Claudia and Alexander. I knew Claudia from my era in the Studentendorf Schlachtensee (Student dormatory / student village as gift of the Americans after World War II for West-Berlin, since the original university was now East-Berlin and influenced by the Communists) in the late 80s. A great atmosphere!



Es geht in die Waldbühne - mein "Wohnzimmer" in Berlin damals Ende 80-er/Anfang 90-er Jahre mit Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Phil Collins, Elton John, Billy Joel, Berliner Philharmoniker usw. usw.. Meine Tageskarte für die öffentlichen Verkehrsbetriebe hätte ich mir sparen können. Die Fahrt ist im Ticketpreis inkludiert. Für mich neu: keine Tasche, die größer ist als DIN A4 darf mit rein. Leider auch keine Picknick-Körbe mehr. Ich bin mit Claudia und Alexander unterwegs. Claudia kenne ich noch aus meiner Zeit im Studentendorf Schlachtensee Ende der 80-er Jahre. Eine tolle Stimmung!

Heute sind wir bei Daniel Barenboim. Gemeinsam mit dem West-Eastern Divan Orchester. Ein tolles Friedensprojekt: über Grenzen hinweg gemeinsam musizieren statt sich gegenseitig bekämpfen. Deswegen auch ein Grußwort von Angela Merkel. Martha Argerich ist die Solistin am Piano und stimmt uns auf unsere Reise nach Russland ein. Ein ganz toller Abend!!!



That night we went to Daniel Barenboim. Together with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. A great peace project: to play mutually cross-border music instead of shooting each other. So there was also some greetings from Angela Merkel. Martha Argerich was the solist at the Grand Piano and so she tuned us well for our voyage to Russia. A wonderful great evening!!!

Finally we had a cocktail in the Marlene Bar. We had one cocktail outdoor. Here we were nicely treated. After our early dinner we were starved. We got so much more that they had no more ham for that night. The visit was just worth to have the cheese snacks. Just simply yummy. A wonderful day came to the end.



Zum Schluss gibt es noch einen Cocktail in der Marlene Bar. Wir trinken noch einen Cocktail draußen. Hier werden wir sehr nett bedient. Nach dem frühen Abendessen sind wir ausgehungert. Wir bekommen soviel Nachschlag, bis dass der Schinkenvorrat zu Ende ist. Der Besuch lohnt sich schon wegen des Käsegebäcks. Einfach nur lecker. Ein toller Tag geht zu Ende.
