Tag/Day 1.3 auf der/on NORWEGIAN EPIC in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Da das Frühstück im Hotel nicht so besonders war, ging es direkt mal zum Mittagessen. Direkt beim ersten Restaurant auf unserem Wege sind wir stehengeblieben: Das Shanghai's.



As the breakfast in the hotel was not the best we went directly for lunch. We just stopped by the first restaurant on our way: The Shanghai's.

For lunch time the bar was set up as typical noodle-bar. Frequent travellers in Asia know them from the lounges there. Later I heared that one waiter recognized me from the last sailing of the NORWEGIAN DREAM: Michael - but unfortunately I did not see him. What a shame.



Mittags war die Theke als typische Nudel-Bar hergerichtet. Vielreisende in Asien kennen sie von den Loungen dort. Hinterher habe ich erfahren, dass ein Kellner mich von der letzten Fahrt der NORWEGIAN DREAM erkannt hätte: Michael - nur leider habe ich gar nicht gesehen. Schade.

Auf dem Tisch fällt ein roter Block auf.



On the table a red block attracted our attention.

That was the menu. For lunch they sold their food with an additional charge - but only à-la-carte in small USD-amounts. But as an example: Singapore Noodles were so far available free of charge at Blue Lagoon Café. Now it was 3.50 USD... but I did not order some so I cannot say if you get a better and larger version than before in Blue Lagoon Café.



Das ist die Speisekarte. Mittags werden die Produkte als Zuzahlangebote verkauft - allerdings mit à-la-carte-Preisen im kleinen Dollar-Bereich. Allerdings: beispielsweise gab es die Singapore Nudeln bislang kostenlos im Blue Lagoon Café. Nun kostet es 3,50 USD... allerdings habe ich mir keine bestellt und kann daher nicht beurteilen, ob es besser und größer ist, als bislang im Blue Lagoon Café.

Man merkte, dass wir die allerersten externen Gäste waren...



You can feel that we were the very first external guests.

A very nice cooking team came and started.



Ein supernettes Kochteam kam und legte los.

Da sie ja nun mit mehr Gästen rechneten, haben sie alles, wie in einer chinesischen Garküche vorbereitet.



As they counted now for more guests they prepared it like in a typical Chinese snack bar.

These were so-called "Pot Stickers". Chinese Dumplings. For an US-ship not so bad. But I would like to send my mother to exchange recipes with the cook. It's a very typical home-meal where everyone has a different recipe and secret. Something I would prefer to eat with my mother and with my family as I was grown up with these dumplings. But if you never had them before: try them.



Diese laufen unter dem Begriff "Pot Stickers". Das sind so eine Art chinesische Maultaschen. Für ein US-Schiff nicht schlecht. Aber ich würde gerne mal meine Mutter und den Koch mal austauschen lassen. Ist so ein typisches Gericht wie Maultaschen im Schwabenländle: jede Hausfrau hat da ein anderes ureigenes Rezept. Etwas was ich künftig lieber bei meiner Mutter esse, weil man einfach damit großgeworden ist und zu Hause am besten im Kreise der Familie schmeckt. Wenn ihr sie noch nie hattet: einfach mal probieren.

Gab es auch in gebratener Form, die ich lieber mochte.



Were also available as fried version which I liked more.

Shrimp Dumplings (mostly known as "Xia Jiau" or in Cantonese "Ha Kao" (or something like this - I only speak Mandarin - but no Cantonese)). Something you cannot get at home because it means a lot of work and so you order it when you are in a restaurant. Not like China-Town but nearby somehow. Otherwise you would need a Cantonese Dim-Sum-Cook on board to make it totally professional.



Krabben-Reisteigtaschen (oft als "Xia Jiau" oder kantonesich "Ha Kao" (oder so ähnich - ich kann nur Mandarin aber kein Kantonesisch)) bezeichnet. Etwas was es zu Hause kaum gibt, da mit viel Arbeit verbunden und immer sofort in einem Restaurant bestellt wird. Nicht ganz China-Town, aber schon ziemlich nahe dran. Das würde schon erfordern, dass man einen kantonesischen Dim Sum-Koch an Bord hätte, um es perfekt zu machen. Aber sie waren sonst sehr gut...

Brunos grüner Tee war leider nur ein Beuteltee von Lipton... Schade... Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, hätte ich vorher aus dem Chinatown in Rotterdam noch Tee besorgt...



Bruno's Green Tea was unfortunately made of Lipton tea-bags... What a shame... If I would have known this before: I would have bought some in Chinatown in Rotterdam...

Brunos Hühner-Nudelsuppe.

Meine "Chia-Shou"-Nudelsuppe (= mariniertes gegrilltes Schweinefleisch mit einer rötlichen Färbung). Perfekt serviert. Leider waren wir in der Tat die allerersten Gäste. Die Brühe hatte wohl noch nicht lange genug durchgekocht.



My "Chia-Shou"-Noodle-Soup (= marinated grilled pork in red color). Perfectly served. But unfortunately we were really the very first guests. Obviously the broth was not boiled long enough.

As I did not ate all the broth they asked immediately what was wrong. They consulted the whole team and they found out that they forgot to add something into the soup.



Dass ich die Suppe nicht aufgegessen hatte, wurde sofort hinterfragt. Sofort wurde das ganze Team zusammengerufen und man stellte fest, dass tatsächlich etwas vergessen wurde.

Da ich jedoch sagte, dass Brunos Hühnerbrühe sehr gut schmeckte, sie allerdings ein wenig kalt sei, wurde der Topf sofort aufgekocht und ich bekam eine Schüssel frische heiße Suppe, die ich genieße. Ich liebe NCL - so wünsche ich es mir mit allen Gesellschaften. Sie gehen auf mich als Kunden ein.



But as I said that Bruno's chicken broth was very nice but a little cold they boiled the soup again and I got a bowl full of fresh hot broth which I really enjoyed. I love NCL - that would be how I would like it with all lines. They take care of my need as their customer.

Pro forma we had to sign the bill this day. But do not get anymore the leather folder but cardwood.



Die Rechnung müssen wir an diesem Tag proforma unterschreiben. Hierzu gibt es allerdings nicht mehr die Lederunterlage, sondern nun aus Pappe.

Da ich ja nur gelegentlich Bingo spiele, kann ich persönlich mit diesem Riesen-Casino nichts anfangen, zumal sie gleichzeitg somit eine riesige Raucherzone ist.



As I only play occassionally Bingo I cannot deal personally with the giant casino which was also a giant smoker's zone.

Through the nice atriums the smoke of the cigarettes went to other areas. But it was good that smoke always went up and not down, otherwise it will not be a pleasure to have food in Taste-Restaurant.



Über die schönen Atriums zieht eben der Zigerettenrauch auch in die anderen Bereiche. Zum Glück steigt Rauch nach oben und nicht nach unten, sonst fände ich es im Taste möglicherweise unangenehm.

Man konnte kommen, wann man wollte. Irgendwie wirkt es jedes Mal anders hier.



You could come at any other time: somehow it appeared differently.

Obviously new is this combined machine to use to change, dispense money or to pay the win.



Neu sind diese Multifunktionsmaschinen: Geldautomat, Wechselautomat, Gewinnauszahlautomat

Eine Rolltreppe im öffentlichen Bereich kannte ich bislang von der Century-Klasse von Celebrity. Die war jedoch in sofern wichtig, um Deck 5 und 6 barrierefrei zu verbinden: Die Aufzüge im Heckbereich halten nämlich nicht auf Deck 5.



I only know escelator in the public area from Celebrity's Century-Class. It is important to connect Deck 5 and 6 barrier-free. The elevators in the aft do no stop on Deck 5.

They served also lunch in Taste. Without any charges. According to the waiter the offer should be the same like in the Manhattan Room.



Im Taste wurde ebenfalls Mittagessen serviert. Zuzahlungsfrei. Lt. Aussagen der Kellner das gleiche Angebot wie im Manhattan Room.

Da Niederlande spielte, gab es natürlich Public Viewing in der Atrium Bar.



As the Netherlands played in Soccer World Cup in South Africa they offered Public Viewing in the Atrium Bar.

KLM was also on board with a counter. They sponsored somehow the journey to this event. So they were allowed to be present on board.



KLM war ebenfalls an Bord mit einem Schalter vertreten. Schließlich haben sie ja die Anreise ein wenig gesponsort. Nun durften sie sich dafür auch an Bord präsentieren.





We were interested in Le Bistro which was hidden in the gallery. By mistake I thought the salesman was the Restaurant Host.



Uns zieht es ins Le Bistro, das zwischen der Galerie versteckt ist. Den Verkäufer halten wir daher irrtümlich für den Restaurant-Host.

Als wir direkt vor Ort einen Tisch bestellen wollen, werden wir an die Reservierungsschalter verwiesen.



When we wanted to book a table there we were redirected to the reservation counters.

Blue is always the starboard side and red the portside. There are no more dolphins swimming to the direction of the bow in the carpet. As there were only two public stairhalls all ways are extremely long on the ship. That's why I feel more comfy on the Jewel-Class-Ships because all ways are nicely short because of the three stairhalls.



Blau ist immer die Steuerbordseite und rot die Backbordseite. Die Delphine schwimmen nicht mehr im Teppichboden, um die Richtung des Bugs anzuzeigen. Da es nur zwei öffentliche Treppenhäuser gibt, sind alle Wege ziemlich lang. Deswegen fühle ich mich auf der Jewel-Klasse wohler, weil dort wegen der drei Treppenhäuser alle Wege schön kurz sind.

Eigentlich sollten wir Parcours laufen, um die Kabinen kennenzulernen. Der Zutritt zu den hier ausgewiesen Courtyard-Kabinen wird uns verwehrt. Auch stehen einige Kabinen nicht zur Verfügung, weil jemand darin untergebracht werden muss.



We should run a racecourse to make acquaintance with the cabins. They denied the access to the Courtyard-cabins. Furthermore few cabins cannot be visited as they need them additionally for guests.

When we booked the table we learned that one more person should stay in our cabin: A Diana Gonzales should stay with us. Reception desk had no more details. We stayed close to our cabin as we want to make sure that none will move into our cabin.



Am Reservierungsschalter erfahren wir, dass wir zu dritt die Kabine belegen. Eine Diana Gonzalez soll bei uns mit in der Kabine wohnen. Genaueres konnte uns aber die Rezeption auch nicht sagen. Wir bleiben lieber in der Nähe der Kabine, um sicherzustellen, dass niemand bei uns mit einzieht.

Beim Atrium Café gibt es die Lavazza-Spezialitäten, die es nicht umsonst gibt.



With the Atrium Café you can have coffee specialities from Lavazza which are on charge.





Bislang erinnere ich mich bloß an Frühstücksgebäck während der Frühstückszeit. Aber ich erinnere mich nicht an den Kuchen dort auf anderen Schiffen.



Until so far I remember only the Danish during breakfast time at the coffee stores. But never I could remember to have cakes there on other ships.

What I never seen before on other NCL-ships: ready-to-go snacks without seeing the Garden Café: Typical Deli-food: Sandwiches, Wraps, Salads, Vegetables etc....



Was ich bislang noch von keinem anderen NCL-Schiff kannte: Fertig verpackte Snacks, ohne dass ich extra ins Garden-Café muss: Typische Deli-Produkte: Salate, Sandwiches, Wraps, Gemüse usw.

Ein Stück Kuchen probiere ich: amerikanisch süß...



I tried a piece of cake: too sweet like normal in the US...

For the life drill we need to see the muster station E. Very angry: in the Casino.



Zur Seenotrettungsübung geht es für uns zur Sammelstation auf E. Besonders ärgerlich: im Casino.

Besonders ärgerlich: in vier Sprachen: Englisch, Deutsch, Italienisch, Spanisch - also die vier Sprachen der Länder, aus denen Abfahrten bestehen und daher viele Reisebüromitarbeiter an Bord sind. Fehlt bloß noch Französisch - und es wäre genauso schlimm, wie bei MSC und Costa. Die Sitzmöglichkeiten sind begrenzt. Unsere Sammelstationsleiter bestehen darauf, dass wir in Reih und Glied uns aufstellen. Erst als ein Offizier vorbeikommt und denen erklärt, dass sie uns sitzen lassen sollen, haben manche das Glück sich zu setzen.



Very angry: in four languages: English, German, Italian, Spanish - so the four languages of the countries which have sailings with NCL-ships and where most of the TA-workers were coming from. Just one more language French - and you had it as bad as with MSC or Costa. Seat options were very limited. The muster drill station team member insisted us to stand and to form rows. When an officer came and explained that we should sit some had luck to find a seat.

Like usual: gamblers should not have the chance to get some food from the restaurants. They should gamble, gamble, gamble. So they had a small buffet in their area.



Wie üblich: Spieler sollen nicht mal die Chance haben, sich etwas zum Essen im Restaurant zu holen. Sie sollen spielen, spielen, spielen. Daher das kleine Büffet für sie vor Ort.

Zufällig läuft mir während der Seenotrettungsübung Luiza über den Weg: meine Lieblings-Maître d'Hotel ist als Supervisor vorübergehend hier und soll das Schiff im SB-Bereich zum Laufen bringen. Da sie mir dort aber immer noch nicht den seit 2007 geschuldeten Cäsaren-Salat von der NORWEGIAN SPIRIT zubereiten kann, verschiebe ich das Wiedersehen bis zum nächsten Mal, wenn sie wieder im normalen Einsatz ist.



What a coincidence: My favourite Maître d'Hotel Luiza crossed the way during the life drill as she was temporary as Supervisor on board and make the self-service restaurant running. As she still owe me a Cesar Salad since I met her the very first time on NORWEGIAN SPIRIT in 2007 I decided to ask for the salad once we meet again when she is on "regular" duty.

Last not least they showed us how to take on your life vests and that was the act. We used an inside stairhall for emergency and missed the right way in the labyrinth. Some crew members who saw us did not say anything. So obviously it was ok.



Am Schluss wird uns noch gezeigt, wie man die Rettungswesten anlegt und das war es. Wir gehen schnell über ein Innentreppenhaus für den Notfall und verlaufen uns prompt im Gewirr des Labyrinthes. Mehrere Crew-Mitglieder, die uns antreffen, sagen nichts. Offensichtlich war es in Ordnung.
