But honestly spoken: on my personal scale of the rate it was neither on the top nor on the bottom. I gave up the hope that there should be some improvements until the end of the cruise. Sorry NCL, that I am soup-lover.



Aber ganz ehrlich: sie war auf meiner persönlichen Skala weder ganz weit oben, noch ganz weit unten. Ich gebe aber die Hoffnung auf, dass sich hier noch etwas zum Positiven verändert. Tut mir leid NCL, dass ich ausgerechnet ein Suppenkasper bin.

Am Eingang gibt es ein feuchtes Tuch. Das gab es ja noch nicht mal bei Holland America als es draußen 40°C heiß war... Klasse.



At the entrance we got a wet towel. That we even did not get with Holland America when we had 100 F outdoor temperature... Wonderful.

Someone asked me to check for Deck 6a. In the elevator this deck was unknown.



Jemand bat mich mal Deck 6a zu besuchen. Im Fahrstuhl kennt man dieses Deck nicht.

Was man auch im Schiff nicht sieht: Deck 6a ist nur über Deck 7 zugänglich.



You could not find it anywhere inside the ship: The access to Deck 6a went via Deck 7.

Das erklärt auch, warum es rund um Deck 6 und 7 soviele Rampen gibt, weil an dieser Stelle die Raumhöhe niedriger wird.



This would explain why there were so many ramps around Deck 6 and Deck 7 because they had to lower the height of the decks.

Here you can see it quite well. Deck 6 is the Promenade Deck. Deck 6a is part of the bow, and then Deck 7 follows at the level of the lifeboats.



Hier sieht man es ziemlich gut. Deck 6 ist das Promenaden-Deck. Deck 6a der Teil im Bug und dann kommt Deck 7 auf der Höhe der Rettungsboote.

Wir haben dieses Mal bei der anderen Taxi-Gesellschaft Norges Taxi bestellt. Nur wenn man dort anruft, muss man wissen, dass man die 4 für Bergen drücken muss. Zum Glück spreche ich etwas Dänisch, so dass ich dass zumindest rausbekommen habe. Das Auto kommt pünktlich und ohne langwierige Diskussionen und mehrfachen Rückfragen.



We booked this time with the other taxi company Norges Taxi. But when you call them, you need to know that you have to press 4 for Bergen. I was lucky that I speak some Danish so I could easily find this out for me. The car came right on time and without any longer discussions or multiple calls.

We went to the Hurtigruten (Norway Coastal Ship Line - Mail-Ships)-Terminal.



Wir fahren zum Hurtigruten-Terminal.

Plan B... FALLS der Zug von Eddie und Frances Verspätung hat, wollten wir mit der MIDNATSOL nach Aalesund hinterherfahren. Es galt eigentlich der Winterfahrplan. Deswegen hätten wir um 22.30 Uhr ablegen sollen. Frances wurde zwei Wochen vor mir darüber informiert, dass die Abfahrtszeit auf 20.00 Uhr vorverlegt wurde. Das entspricht der Abfahrt im Sommerfahrplan. Führt etwa die Tour in den Geirangerfjord? Nach vielen vielen Telefonaten mit Tallinn (Die Hamburger Reservierung gibt es nicht mehr), kam heraus, dass die MIDNATSOL zusätzlich Öye im Hjörundfjord halten soll. Es werden zwar Landausflüge angeboten. Aber in Tallinn weißt keiner, wie man an Land kommt und ob man aussteigen darf. Man bekommt es auch nicht heraus und teilt mir kurzerhand mit, dass mein Plan nicht aufgeht, wenn ich nicht bis Aalesund 2 (auf der Rückfahrt nach Kirkenes) mitfahre. Ich schreibe kurzerhand ein paar passende Worte an den Vorstand der Hurtigruten, so dass es dann möglich war, dass wir bis Öye mitfahren.



Plan B... JUST IN CASE Eddie and Frances' train would be late we wanted to follow by MIDNATSOL to Aalesund. It should normally be sailing like in the winter schedule. So the departure should be 22.30 hrs. Frances got two weeks before I got the notification that the departure was rescheduled to 20.00 hrs which means sailing like in the summer schedule. That would maybe mean that they would go to the Geirangerfjord? After many many calls in Tallinn (Estonia - the Hamburg reservation desk does not exist anymore), I found out that MIDNATSOL should have an additional call in Öye in the Hjörundfjord. They offered shore excursion, but in Tallinn, Estonia, nobody was able to find out if we can disembark there or not. So they just told me that I have to leave the ship in Aalesund 2 (on the way back Kirkenes-bound). I wrote a few appropriate words to the board of Hurtigruten, and so it was free to go to Öye.

Nun hatten wir ein Problem: wir hatten das ganze Gepäck von Frances und Eddie bei. In die Kabinen darf man erst ab 18.00 Uhr. Um 18.00 Uhr müssen wir aber am Bahnhof sein, um sie abzuholen. Niemand am Hurtigruten-Terminal kann Geld wechseln.



Now we had another problem: we had all the bags from Frances and Eddie with us. We were allowed to enter the cabins at 18.00 hrs. But 18.00 hrs we need to be at the station for pick-up. Nobody was able to change money at the Hurtigruten-Terminal.

So we queued for the next available life drill which would allow us to enter the ship.



So stellen wir uns doch für die nächste Seenotrettungsübung an, um an Bord zu gehen.

Allerdings läuft gerade eine, die vor einer Minute begonnen hat. Man lässt uns nicht mehr rein. Wir müssen fast eine halbe Stunde warten.



One just started one minute ago but they refuse us to participate in this one, and we need to wait another half hour.

Here they had their shore excursion programme. So nobody needs to order a tender boat just for us.

The daily programme was one document with four languages.

You got a sticker that you see immediately that you participated in the life drill.



Wir bekommen einen Sticker, damit man sofort sieht, dass wir die Seenotrettungsübung schon mitgemacht haben.

Sie findet noch statt bevor man zusteigt. Eine Reiseleiterin samt deutscher Gruppe meint, dass sie sich nicht anstellen muss und geht einfach seitlich ein, während wir Individualreisende brav in der Schlange warten. Auch hinterher: Reiseleiterin stellt sich direkt in den Eingangsbereich des Schiffes und wartet auf Gruppe, bis gar kein Individualreisender mehr vorbeikommt.



It was hold before you enter the ship. A German tour leader thought they she can skip the line with her group and used a side entrance while we individual guests were like idiots and queuing up. Later again she blocked the entrance hall as she was waiting there before all of her group arrived the ship, so no individual guest had a chance to enter.

I could save my earplugs. Everything was only as loud as a home entertainment system could be.

Dafür wird aber immer schön gezeigt, welche Rettungswesten es gibt. Übrigens sollen wir sie nicht auf der Kabine suchen. Dort wären sie nämlich nicht.



But they showed which type of life vests were available. By the way, we should not try to find them in our cabins. There were none of them.

As it could be freezing you also had thermal suits. You were allowed to try them yourself. We had the luck that nobody wanted. And all explanations in three languages. We did not care if it was 18.00 hrs or not: we entered the cabin and throw the bags inside. The baggage storage was unattended, and I did not want to store my valuables there.



Da es ja besonders kalt ist, gibt es auch Thermo-Anzüge. Man darf sie hinterher auch selbst ausprobieren. Aber zum Glück will niemand. Und alles dreisprachig. Egal ob 18.00 Uhr oder nicht: wir gehen in die Kabine und werfen das Gepäck rein. Die Gepäckaufbewahrung ist unbeaufsichtigt und ich habe keine Lust die Wertsachen dort aufzubewahren.

Dank des 2. Taxi-Unternehmens, das sofort ein Taxi schickt, schaffen wir es rechtzeitig zum Bahnhof, zumal der Zug eine leichte Verspätung hat. Wir würden es theoretisch zur NORWEGIAN SUN schaffen, aber offiziell verpassen wir in Bergen das Schiff. Mit der Wahrheit kommt man leider bei NCL nicht immer weiter. Es ist eben nicht wie bei Holland America, die dann ihre Unterstützung ausdrücklich anbieten und daher alle Kontaktdaten haben wollen, wenn man an Land ist. Ist unser Risiko und alles geschieht auf unsere Kosten. In den USA (z. B. zwischen Häfen in Alaska oder von Florida nach Key West) würden wir das nicht machen, da noch eine Strafe anfällt, die wir dann auch übernehmen müssten. Aber zum Glück sind wir in Europa und im Schengen-Raum, so dass wir wenig Probleme erwarten.



As we booked again with the 2nd taxi-company which sent immediately a car we made it right on time to the train station as it was slightly delayed. We would make it right on time to NORWEGIAN SUN, but we missed the ship officially in Bergen. It does not make too much sense, to tell the truth with NCL. It was not like with Holland America who wanted to have your contact details ashore just for the worst case. It was our risk, and it was all for our account. We would never do this in the USA (like between ports in Alaska or from Florida to Key West) because there would be a penalty we have to pay. But we were lucky that we were in Europe and in the Schengen-Treaty area so we would not expect too many problems.

Norway in the Nutshell was done. They did not meet anyone from the ship.

Before we went with them to check in we just passed Bryggen to allow them to take few pictures.



Bevor wir zum Check-In fahren, fahren wir schnell an Bryggen vorbei, damit sie zumindest ein paar Fotos machen können.

Ihre Seenotrettungsübung dauert so lange, dass wir leider die Ausfahrt der NORWEGIAN SUN verpasst haben. Dabei hat wohl der Kapitän gesagt, dass er wünscht, dass wir ein paar schöne Bilder von der Ausfahrt machen. Heute wäre es bei Regen eh nicht so toll geworden. Natürlich mache ich das was der Kapitän will: mir wird schon ein passender Hafen dafür einfallen.



Their life drill took so long that we missed unfortunately the sailing of NORWEGIAN SUN. The Captain said that he wished that we should take some nice pictures when the ship sails. Now with the rain, the pictures would not be so nice. Of course, I will do exactly what the Captain said, and all I need to have was a suitable port for the pictures.
